One of my favorite bloggers and internet marketers is Kim Roach over at BuzzBlogger.com.

WordPress 3.4 was released on June 13, 2012 and I advised all of my readers and clients to wait a week to 10 days BEFORE making the decision to update their WordPress installations. Good news!! I just finished updating over 2 dozen client sites and it has been flawless!! It appears that all of the plugins I recommend have been updated in record time and there are no glitches and hangups!!

The biggest change in 3.4 is the theme customizer which allows you to play around with various looks and settings for your current theme or one you’re thinking about switching to without publishing those changes to the whole world. For themes that support it, you can change colors, backgrounds, and of course custom image headers. WordPress has more planned for the customizer down the road.

Throughout the rest of the admin you’ll notice tweaks to make your everyday life easier. For example, if you have lots of themes we’ve made it quicker to browse them all at once without paging. WordPress has made it possible to use images from your media library to populate custom headers, and for you to choose the height and width of your header images.

WordPress has expanded the embed support to include tweets: just put a Twitter permalink on its own line in the post editor and it will be turned into a beautiful embedded Tweet. And finally, image captions have been improved to allow HTML, like links, in them.

Here is the step-by-step procedure I personally use to update a site and it is the one I recommend that others use too! Be forewarned – this is not a quick update if you have alot of plugins. So give yourself enough time to do this correctly and it will save you alot of time and headaches in the long run!

  • Backup your site
  • Deactivate all of your plugins
  • Upgrade your WordPress Install to 3.4 (very easy to do from within your dashboard)
  • When you get the “Site Successfully Updated” message, reactivate your plugins ONE-BY-ONE. There are some plugins that will need to have their settings updated as well.
  • Create a new backup of your site
  • You are DONE!!

Several themes, including Thesis, have released updates to take advantage of these new features.

Pinterest Profits Are Ripe For Picking If You Take The Time To Find The Low Hanging Fruit And Handle It With Care!!

Pinterest has captivated my attention!! Pinterest is TOTALLY addictive!! And right now, the reasons for using it are so compelling that I am taking a quick break from work to write this for you!!  That’s the good news and the bad news 🙂 My work days are so jam-packed and tightly booked that if I don’t schedule “Pin Time” and honor it, a couple of hours will pass in the blink of an eye and I am scrambling to get back on schedule!!

 

If you are not familiar with Pinterest it’s a very simple concept … a visual bookmarking service with a strong emphasis on sharing things that you love and that interest you! You organize all your beautiful finds from across the internet on ‘pinboards’ – virtual wall boards – that you can pin photos, fabulous recipes and ideas to.  You can have as many pinboards as you want and pin as many things to them as you want.  Lots of people are using Pinterest to plan their weddings, decorate their homes, organize their favorite recipes, collect craft ideas, and so much more.  You can save gift lists, wish lists, inspirational words, fashion ideas, menu ideas, gardening ideas, fitness information … whatever you want. You can even create a virtual dream board for yourself !! 🙂 VERY. VERY. COOL!!

 

The addictive part is when you start looking at other people’s pins – browsing pins and pinboards created by other folks is FUN, discovering new things, getting inspired, re-pinning the ones you like … it goes on and on and on.  It’s really hard to stop!  You can follow your friends to see what they are pinning as well as finding new friends who share your interests.
Pinterest is free to join … but you have to request an invite first!! <<<click here to request an invite :)>>>   Everyone I know is on it or wants to be on it! However, it’s not open for simple signup. You have to have an invitation to start pinning. You can request one from Pinterest directly – it takes about 48 hours to get approved or you can request that I send you one and I will get an invite sent to you right away!!

 

If you are selling products online, you just might want to consider adding Pinterest to your marketing funnel!

 

A few days ago, TechCrunch published an article reviewing Pinterest’s amazingly fast growth – Pinterest Hits 10 Million US Monthly Uniques Faster Than Any Standalone Site Ever According To comScore.

 

This is really significant to business owners who are blogging to build a business online because Pinterest is currently driving MORE referral traffic than Google+, LinkedIn and YouTube COMBINED!! Pinterest is a great place to get some new and creative ideas for blog posts. Browse through pinboards using a keyword search related to your blog topic. You’re sure to find a diverse list of pinboards and pins to get your creative juices flowing. Click through some of the results and see what people are sharing on their pinboards as well as which pins are getting a lot of repins, likes, and comments. These are likely to be images and videos that will get your blog audience talking and repinning YOUR information!

 

The private mastermind I belong to has been digging into Pinterest marketing extensively for the past 6 weeks to determine it’s viability as a source of referral traffic and as a profit stream. Hands down, everyone who is using Pinterest has seen increased exposure and traffic to their sites and blogs from using Pinterest. Some have reported back that they have seen nice increases in sales and profits which they are directly relating back to their products’ exposure on Pinterest. There are 10 Niches that look really promising at this point in time!

 

After an intense coaching session with my teacher, I reluctantly started using Pinterest myself. I was thinking … OH NO not another thing to add to my already overbooked list of things to do! I did it anyways because of the group’s results  …

 

I pinned some of my food photos, some of my favorite books, started my bucket list, added some inspiration and wisdom pins … and I decided to pin some information about a special that a company I love and do affiliate marketing for is running for Valentine’s Day! I was pleasantly surprised when I reviewed my traffic data – there was an 18% spike in traffic directly related back to Pinterest! Certainly not huge a huge jump in traffic – but the cost to me was about 15 minutes of my time 🙂 .. no PPC spends required!! AND I sold two specials!! Happy Valentine’s Day!!

 

Marketing and promotion on Pinterest does need to be handled with care in order for it to not be considered spam. You must pin more content from other sources than your own, or you’ll look like you’re only interested in self-promotion. No one will follow you and you might even be found in violation of Pinterest’s terms of use if you use your pinboards solely for self-promotion. Even though this is a “visual book marking service”, the opportunity for some serious engagement and networking exists.

 

Find people in your niche and start to engaging with them by liking, repinning, and commenting on their pins. They might start doing the same for you. And they will put your pins in front of a wider audience. Some of that exposure may turn into blog traffic from people who see your pins and want to learn more from you! The big key here – BE YOURSELF … be authentic, be genuine, be heart-centered! Build relationships with other Pinners … you never know what sort of an opportunity could be waiting for you as a result of that relationship!

 

As someone with my own WordPress and Content Management business, I can brand myself there in small ways. Or I could just be an affiliate marketer for products and services I use and love. Did you know that if you sign up for an Amazon Associates account, you can make money if someone buys something through your recommendations on Pinterest? Just don’t go spamming the board with things that you have no personal experience with! That just stinks … It’s unethical.
For example, I’ve pinned books I love to read. I use my affiliate link. I’m totally genuine in my recommendations. I only promote products I LOVE because I know other people out there will feel they’re a good fit and will benefit from them. I don’t just go randomly pinning things to get a commission – that’s UNETHICAL!

 

Seriously … i don’t have kids and everyone who knows me knows that I don’t have kids. If I started promoting things for kids, I would be called out in less than a New York minute by my friends. They would NEVER buy kids’ things from me. And, they would know that the only thing I am interested in is the commission attached to the product. I would lose alot of credibility with them and that would be bad business all the way around!

 

One of the BIG take-aways that I got from Mari Smith’s recent Extreme Facebook Fanbase promotion is that:

 

“unless you’re getting ‘up close and personal’ with the subtle blending of social buzz and Social Commerce, your fans will leave you behind in a mouse-click”

 

Mari is spot on with that statement. Alot of formerly high powered marketers are having client retention challenges of epic proportions. They have taken themselves so far out of their heart centered communications with their clients, fans and followers that people are refusing to do business with them. I don’t see it being any different with the people you meet and network with on Pinterest, Youtube, LinkedIn …. Pinterest takes social networking and commerce to a whole new level due to the visual impact of the photos and videos being shared! If done right, Pinterest is a potential gold-mine for ethical marketers and business owners.

How I Beat The UGLY PayPal Button Demon To a Bloody PULP 😉

I really do like it when "projects" that I am working on for clients turn out well and the final product looks totally yummy 🙂 After all, I really want my clients to LOVE my work and keep on hiring me right … ??? So I MUST deliver an excellent product every single time …

The other day I was setting up a sales page in WordPress for a gal who is selling an e-Book that I edited for her. And I am trying to get the danged Paypal "Buy Now" Button to look just like it does on PayPal's site … nice … neat … proportional … professional … you get my drift ! And the button wouldn't cooperate.

It  S  P  R  A  W  L  E  D all over the whole page … just like the one at the top … YUCKKKKKK !!

No way Jose was I going to let that UGLY button live on the same page as that beautiful e-Book!!

I was bound and DETERMINED to figure out how to make that button worthy of that page. (Can you tell that I am challenge driven? …. :-))

I put it in a table to "contain and compress" the html … better but not great …

I fiddled with the html code and blew the button up!! I was getting REALLY annoyed by the whole thing … and my client needed the page DONE in an hour and a half … and I did NOT have a viable solution …

I took a deep breath and made some iced tea .. trying to relax enough to get a Divine download …

10 minutes passed … nothing … 15 minutes passed … nothing …

I was getting ready to pick up the phone and tell her I couldn't give her what she needed to launch her e-Book promotion …

And then IT came to me … a possible solution that was so danged simple and easy … I was shocked …

If it worked it would be a PERFECT hack 😉 oh I have absolutely no doubt in the world that there is a way to do this perfectly with the PayPal Code … however … time was not on my side this morning … I needed the solution NOW !!  And since my usual resources had been complaing of the EXACT same problem … I needed to get creative on my own and find a simple, non-techie solution NOW !!

Now the only thing left to do was to make sure it really worked the way I thought it would …

So here is what I did 🙂

I logged into her PayPal Account (yes , my clients trust me THAT much)

And Created A New Buy Now Button

Step 1 – Log Into Your Paypal Account and Create a New Buy Now button

Here Is  Tip That Will Help With WordPress

Step 2 – Fill In All Of  The Details

Step 3 – Click on Step 2 In Your PayPal Account

Step 4 – Go To Step 3 In Your PayPal Account and Fill Out The Requested Information

Step 5 – Click on Create Button

Step 6 – Copy That Code – Isn't That Button On The Paypal Site Just Beautiful?

I tip my hat to Eric Worre of NetworkingMarketingPro.com, for today's bold video calling for some serious change in the Network Marketing Industry, starting at company ownership level. Eric challenges the networking marketing community at large and the owners, product formulators and management teams of those companies specifically to work much harder than they are on their Product Value Proposition than they do at recruiting and maintaining corporate culture.

What IS Product Value Proposition?

Eric explains it very simply as a product's WOW FACTOR,  the price of the product and it's ability to compete effectively in the marketplace. I can hear network marketers every where saying, "BUT Rose … my product IS the best out there … that's why it's priced the way it is … and NO other company is using that super duper magical pixie dust in THEIR products, so there is NO COMPETITION." And, as you are saying that, I want you to ponder this – "If you were no longer able to be a distributor for your company would you stay on autoship, continue to use the product and recommend the product to others ?"

BE HONEST with yourself. If your answer is no, it is time for some serious soul searching, because you are not adding any sort of real value to your own life and to anyone else's. Sure you maybe making money right now, but the question I have for you is, how much of that money is RESIDUAL INCOME versus fast start commissions? If most of your income is coming from fast start payouts, and you are replacing your BUSINESS BUILDERS every 90 days, there is a BIG PROBLEM with the way your business (if you can call it that) is being built.

Network Marketing is all about selling AMAZING products to people who are willing to pay a fair market price for the results that they get from those products. Those results are so positively life changing that they cannot imagine ever being without those products, so they order them like clockwork month after month, year after year and as a distributor you get paid month after month, year after year for those purchases. It really is not about making money, it is about making someone else's life better. When you do that by putting the other person's needs first,  the money follows.

One of the most profound statements that Eric made in the video is that the days of $200+ a month autoships on "me too" products that really don't compete in the marketplace are coming to an end. The New Economy simply will not tolerate over priced, mediocre products EVEN if they have an income opportunity attached to them. The New Economy is pushing the entire world to a tipping point in how business is being done.

Building a network marketing business is proving to be a far better way to take back control. However, network marketing companies that do not do the right thing, i.e. produce truly amazing products that are competitively priced will have a really hard time staying in business. Just imagine what could happen if a network marketing company was totally over delivering to raving product users who can't wait to talk about their results with everyone they come in contact with! Product sales on steroids …??? True lifetime residual income for distributors …??? The PROMISE fulfilled?

No wonder so many network marketers are not seeing the results they want and so many have started asking "Where Did The Money Go?"

Seriously, how many different kinds of Super Juice are out in the market place? How many different kinds of Protein Shakes are out there? How about Discount Travel Programs? Discount Technology Programs? Healthy Coffee and Chocolate? Essential Oils, Cards and Coins? … You name it and it probably has a network marketing opportunity attached to it. The only thing that I can think of that doesn't is … burial plots 😉

What makes one product stand head shoulders above another in the marketplace and which company is producing it should be qualifying questions that everyone asks BEFORE they get involved with a network marketing business opportunity.

The bottom line,  the New Economy has created new rules that most network marketing companies have never had to contend with. And, in order to meet the new demand being expressed by the marketplace, high-value, more price sensitive products need to be created. Some companies have already started doing this. Others are still playing by the old rules. Kudos to the companies that have stepped up to the plate already. Research and development is a lengthy process and these companies have positioned themselves and their distributors to win in the New Economy.

So, once again, I am going to ask you to seriously think about this question …

"Would you continue to purchase these products, at the price you are currently paying, every single month, even if you were NOT involved with the business opportunity?"

If your answer is yes, I encourage you to go out there and serve as many people as you can. If your answer is no, I encourage you to think long and hard about what your future looks like in network marketing if you continue to build something that is not truly aligned with your mission and values through serving others with honor and integrity.

Dame Elizabeth Taylor – The Original “It” Girl

My father was a very tough, very private man. Spending 5 years in a POW camp will do that to a person. Add in a life long love affair with whiskey, a hair-trigger temper and a proclivity to flip his finger at the world and it’s easy to see why very little seemed to impress him. There was one person who was an exception to that – Elizabeth Taylor.

I am not sure why she got under his skin the way she did, but she did. And it’s something that I have always been grateful for. It made my father seem alot more human to me which is something that I had issues around for a long time. I honestly think that it was her sheer courage and determination to LIVE as big a life as possible that caught my father’s attention. She was a true survivor who chose to live with passion and purpose. She has been quoted as saying,    I’m a survivor – a living example of what people can go through and survive.”  That would be something my father could appreciate and resonate with.  

Elizabeth was a drop dead gorgeous, supremely talented, highly public mess for many of the years that she was in the limelight. It took her most of her life to overcome her own challenges. However, that is not what this article is about. I want to talk about how she was able to become and remain the quintessential “It Girl” in spite, maybe because of, all that stuff.

Almost everyone has heard something about her marriages, addictions, insecurities, jewelry, homes and the people and things she was most passionate about. What was always hidden underneath the surface of all that stuff, was Elizabeth Taylor’s extraordinary business acumen

During her marriage to Sir Richard Burton, wise investing continued to quietly yield very handsome profits. 3. Have The Right People On Your Side

When Malcolm Forbes (the publisher of Forbes business magazine) introduced Elizabeth at a top secret press conference announcing her new business venture, a perfume called Passion, the world collectively gasped and took notice. “I decided that with my name I could open certain doors, that I was a commodity in myself—and I’m not talking as an actress. I could take the fame I’d resented and tried to get away from for so many years—but you can never get away from it—and use it to do some good. I wanted to retire, but the tabloids wouldn’t let me. So I thought, If you’re going to screw me over, I’ll use you.”

8. Learn To Leverage The Reach And Impact Of The Media

Elizabeth’s plan to use the media worked. The press had followed her every move for decades, and by attaching her name to the AIDS crisis, they would have to publicly acknowledge it. Elizabeth Taylor leveraged her love – hate relationship with the media and broke down the stereotypes associated with the disease.  Thanks to the press, people all over the world knew who she was. She leveraged the media to start educating the world – AIDS was not a “gay man’s disease”. AIDS could potentially affect everyone … and noone was immune to it.

Elizabeth’s AIDS work has been recognized throughout the entire world. The legacy that she leaves to all of mankind is that she has made a huge a difference in the lives of those who have contracted this terrible disease. To date, the different AIDS groups that she worked with have raised well over $300 million dollars. She used every single one of the resources she had … and LEVERAGED them to the hilt!!

With the recent advent of Social Media, Elizabeth stepped out even further into the public by creating a Twitter account, @DameElizabeth, in 2009. Although she tweeted infrequently (131 tweets total), she tweeted right from her heart.

Elizabeth’sTwitter page gives us a peek into to the final years of her life.

“I was honored with the great privilege of seeing ‘This Is It’ last week. I was sworn to secrecy, but now I can let you know about it,” @DameElizabeth tweeted. “From ‘Black And White, ‘Man In The Mirror.’ The inspiration behind ‘We Are The World.’ We must take his words of responsibility seriously.”

Her passion and support for the Aids work being done worldwide is evident with this tweet,

“One Color Unites Us on WORLD AIDS DAY. Show your support for @joinred. Buy (RED) Save Lives.”

If you take the time to read through her Twitterfeed, you can see the words of wisdom and inspiration she poured into her followers …

“You can’t cry on a diamond’s shoulder and diamonds won’t keep you warm at night, but they’re sure fun when the sun shines!” one of her very first tweets in 2009. And one of her last tweets in 2010, “Every breath you take today should be with someone else in mind. I love you.”

9. Stand For Something – Your Opinion Matters

Elizabeth learned to keep herself in the public’s eye. She was not at all shy about sharing her opinions about things.

“I don’t think President Bush is doing anything at all about Aids. In fact, I’m not sure he even knows how to spell Aids.”    she once said !! 

   

10. You Simply Cannot Please Everyone – So Don’t Try And Don’t Take “NO” Personally

In January 1985 she was asked to support a dinner being held by APLA (AIDS Project Los Angeles). Elizabeth knew from the get go that getting support form the Hollywood community was going to be really tough.  Elizabeth experienced first hand the fear and condemnation surrounding the disease when she tried to recruit longtime friends and peers to lend their support of the dinner.

“I have never had so many ‘no’s said to me. They didn’t want to come to the evening, didn’t want to be associated. People not only slammed doors in my face and hung up on me, but I received death threats. Something happened to the world, and I think it was massive fear.”

Obviously Elizabeth ignored all of it and pushed forward.  Thank God she knew what her mission and purpose were and never gave up!

The world is a much better, far more interesting place because of Dame Elizabeth Taylor. Thank you for YOU !! You were truly a gift from God. You will always be the original “It Girl”.

It's St. Patty's Day tomorrow and here in NYC we are looking at the 250th celebration of Ireland's favorite Patron Saint, Green Beer, All Things Irish, Corned Beef and Cabbage and the Wearin' Of The Green. Our legendary St. Patrick's Day Parade kicks off at 11:00 starting on 44th and 5th ending up on 86th St. in the Upper East Side. FUN … FUN … FUN!!

When I was a little girl, I always made sure that I had something green to wear to school on St. Patty's Day because everyone else was wearing green on that day and I didn't want to feel like a weirdo … LOL. I knew that it was a really special day for lots of other reasons too. I had heard that St. Patrick had driven all the snakes off Ireland and into the sea. And that HE was the one who made SHAMROCKS famous throughout the world. I heard really cool stories about Druids and how St. Patrick had used magic to turn himself into a deer and escape from lots of dangerous Celtic warriors. And how, because his magic was so much stronger than the High King's, he was allowed to convert many of the pagans living in Ireland into Christians.

St. Patrick died in 493 AD, a good 1400 years BEFORE I even knew he existed. That man's story has some real serious sticking power 🙂 … it's how legends are created.  It's the kind of stuff that turns someone or something into a household name worldwide for centuries … creates a tremendous human bond … and educates people in a fun and painless way!!

Stories are the banquet platters of life and business – serving up all sorts of information … history, traditions, experiences, words, values … things that are important to both to the one telling the story and to the listener. A great story is one of our most powerful tools for highly effective communication. With stories we can share history, heritage and pedigree, teach, persuade, entertain and share information in a way that is genuine and very compelling.

Great stories are rarely aimed at everyone. Average people are good at ignoring you. Average people have too many different points of view about life and average people are by and large satisfied. If you need to water down your story to appeal to everyone, it will appeal to no one. The most effective stories match the world view of a tiny audience—and then that tiny audience spreads the story.

5 Tips To Turn Your Stories Into An Attraction Marketing Pot O' Gold

There's alot of mumbo jumbo out there when it comes to marketing – attraction marketing, direct response marketing, network marketing, relationship marketing, reverse marketing, word-of-mouth marketing, internet marketing, offline marketing … you know EXACTLY what I mean. Marketing fundamentally is nothing more than the process of preparing potential buyers to purchase whatever it is that is being sold.

For me, Attraction Marketing is all about marketing in a way specifically designed to get my information in front of people who are actively looking for what I have, drawing them to me, so that we can have a meaningful two-way conversation, create a heart to heart connection between us, allowing me to understand how to best serve and educate them about what I do and how my products and services can benefit them, establishing real trust between us, well before they purchase anything from me.

There is no denying it – facts tell and stories sell. Here are five tips to help you turn your stories into a Pot O' Gold !!

Clearly illustrate the product’s unique value – A great story that illustrates the value of a product within your niche really isn’t all that useful.  It has to highlight what sets your product or service head and shoulders above everyone else's without bad mouthing the competition.

The story has got to be short and easy to tell in a very memorable way – You want everyone – your friends and family, sales folks, other marketers and your delighted customers to be able to tell the story well.  They won’t be able to do that if it is difficult to understand or too long.  Keep it short, entertaining and right on point. You will be surprised at how many more people will be thrilled to tell that story for you. (Remember the story I told you about St. Patrick – over 1400 years in the telling 🙂 and it is still going strong)

The story needs to be relevant to your ideal clients – Telling a great story about a client outside of your niche really isn’t all that valuable. Your ideal clients must be able to relate themselves and their reasons for wanting to do business with you through other client stories that sound very similar to theirs.

Your stories must illustrate measurable, tangible results – The results … the “what happened” … part of your story has to be concrete and quantifiable.  General statements like “improved vitality” don’t pack the punch of “lost 60 pounds in 9 months and threw away my insulin”.

Happy client testimonials- These are the absolute BEST stories to have about your products and services. It is one thing when you are talking about your stuff and the results people get  …  a completely different level of credibility is achieved when someone else enthusiastically shares their before and after story on your behalf.


Telling great stories requires thought and practice …
just like anything else to be mastered. So, I am inviting you to tell me YOUR best story in the comments below. Spring is coming … March is here … yipppeee !! Yesterday the sun was BLAZING in her glory, only to be blown out a couple of times by the ferocity of the wind. Thank goodness she lit herself back up again 🙂 Today, the sun is hiding behind the rain clouds and the wind is still whipping around NYC. Reports from SW Florida – windy and muggy – the porpoises are happy. From Maine – rain is coming, very windy, lots of mud and ice – a great day for a bike ride. From Nigeria – lots of sunshine and fresh air – great day to be alive !!

Did you know that a little over 2,000 years ago this month Roman Emperor Julius Caesar was stabbed to death by dozens of members of the Roman Senate, uttering "Et tu, Brute?" before collapsing into a pool of his own blood. Caesar's last words in 44 BC were directed at a man he thought was a steadfast ally — Marcus Janius Brutus.

A very clever Elizabethan author, William Shakespeare, used words describing the circumstances surrounding Caesar's death to turn this time of year into one of pensive foreboding, writing "beware the Ides of March", a phrase which has stuck with us and has been widely quoted since the 1600's.

I know what you're thinking … "What does all that have to do with life and business?"

Before I get to that, I've got a little story to share with you 🙂

The Scorpion And The Farmer

One blustery March day, a Scorpion looked around at the mountain where he lived and decided that he wanted a change. So he set out on a journey through the forests and hills. He climbed over rocks and under vines and kept going until he got to an 8 foot wide stream of fast running water.

The stream was too wide and running REALLY fast because of all the rain. The scorpion stopped to consider the situation. He couldn't see any way across. So he scuttled upstream and then checked downstream, all the while thinking that he might have to turn back.

Suddenly, he saw a farmer getting some water on the other side of the stream. "Wow … that farmer has really long legs. This will be sooo easy now", chuckling to himself at the thought. 

He decided to ask the man for help getting across the stream.

"Hellooo Mr. Farmer!" called the scorpion across the fast moving water, "Would you be so kind as come over here, pick me up and carry me across this water?"

"Good day to you Scorpion! How do I know that if I try to help you, you wont try to kill me?" asked the farmer hesitantly.

"Because," the scorpion replied, "If I try to kill you, then I would die too. You already know that I cannot swim!"

The farmer knew the scorpion was telling the truth about not being able to swim. He had also heard from other people how deadly the sting of a Scorpion's tail was.  He was VERY cautious.

But, something about THIS scorpion seemed different,  so he asked,  "What about when I get close to the other side? You could still try to kill me and get back to dry land!"

"True," agreed the scorpion, "But then I won't be able to get to the side of the stream that I really want to be on!"

"Sooo Scorpion … how do I know you won't just wait till we get to the other side and THEN kill me?" asked the farmer.

"Ohh… that is simple," crooned the scorpion ever so sweetly, "Because, once you've taken me to the other side, I will be so grateful for your help, that it would hardly be fair to reward you with death, now would it?!"

"Wow … THIS Scorpion IS different!!" the farmer said to himself.

So the farmer was delighted to help the scorpion across the river. He crossed the stream with several big strides. He reached his hand out to pick up his new friend. The scorpion crawled onto the farmer's hand, his sharp claws digging into the soft flesh of the farmer's palm. and the farmer took his first step back across the stream. The muddy water swirled around his boots, but the farmer held the scorpion high above the water so he would not drown. He strode confidently into the water, his steps sure and solid in spite of the strength of the current.

Halfway across the stream, the farmer suddenly felt a sharp, red hot pain shooting through his hand.  When he looked down, he saw the scorpion whipping his tail around, pulling his stinger out of his hand. A deadening numbness began to creep up his arm.

The farmer started to shake his hand frantically … but the Scorpion hung on digging his claws deep into the farmer's numb hand. The farmer stumbled, the shock of the betrayal and the venom quickly running through his system making him dizzy.

"You LIAR!! … I TRUSTED you!!" shouted the farmer, "Why on earth did you do that? You said YOU were different!! Let GO of my hand !!"

Desperate with fear and pain, the farmer did what instinct told him to do. He plunged his hand deep into the water, holding it there until he saw the body of the Scorpion washing away … Then he scrambled to his feet … knowing that he needed to get medical attention as soon as possible. Lucky farmer … he ended up being OK … the Scorpion that had stung him was not lethal to humans. The only thing that had been massively damaged was his ability to trust his own judgment …

"Et tu, Scorpion?"

The Scorpion knew he was going to die … and he was totally ok with that.

As he felt the cold and darkness slowly engulfing him, he actually did some happy tail waving. With no remorse, shame or guilt, he said to himself, "What did that silly farmer expect anyway … He knew what I was before he picked me up.  I'm a Scorpion. I sting anything that gets in my way. I have no choice. It is simply my nature."

It Is What It Is In Life And Business

Two legged Scorpions are everywhere and just about everyone, at one time or another, gets stung. It's unavoidable. Thankfully most survive (Julius Caesar being the obvious exception to that). However, the scars that are left from a scorpion sting can be pretty ugly and very slow to fade away. 

Accept The Critter For What It Is

A Scorpion is what it is. It is an opportunistic predator. It's sole purpose on this planet is to KILL and EAT whatever it can to ensure it's own survival. Accept that fact, because a Scorpion's intrinsic nature cannot be changed.

Extending the analogy out to the two-legged species, I am reminded of something T Harv Eker once said, "How you do anything is how you do everything." People are very unique in that they have choice about what their intrinsic nature is. Past performance (history repeats itself) generally is a good indicator of "How and Who" a person chooses to be in life and business.

The species count is HUGE when it comes to two-legged Scorpions. Because they all look very different, it can be really difficult to spot them right away. Some of the more common types are the gossips, murmurers and complainers. Also those who are jealous, judgmental and critical.

And the most lethal of all are the Undercover Scorpions. They hide in plain sight, disguised to look just like our family, friends, coaches, mentors, political leaders, spiritual leaders, teachers, doctors … the people that we have been told to LOVE, RESPECT and TRUST.

The venom in their sting is time-released and intensifies over time. It can bring paralysis and even death to life and business  because of the trust and respect we give them and the value we give to their opinions of us and the things that are important to us …

Their venom is the words that so easily and unguardedly fall from their lips.

"Why can't you be more like your brother … he ALWAYS gets better grades than you"

"Do you think money grows on trees? We can't afford that!"

"If only I were running this business … that guy doesn't know what he is doing"

"Did you SEE what she wore today …. Who does she think she is?"

"Oh … I tried one of those "things" before … It didn't work …they are all scams."

"You can't do that … You're a girl … Only boys do that!"

"It's a sin to have money when so many other people don't."

"For heaven's sake …You're a lawyer Bob … You're crazy to even consider giving up a respectable job to do something like THAT"

Words about everything … from the way someone thinks and behaves, to how they spend their time and money, to what they do for a living and how they run their business.

Life and Death live in the power of those words … they cut right through people just like a hot knife slicing through butter. When those words are positive and constructive, they have an incredible way of building up someone's sense of self-esteem, self-worth and self-confidence. However, the exact opposite is also possible.

If all a kid ever hears from his parents are harsh, abusive words of condemnation, criticism and negativity – then that kid’s self-esteem and self-worth can be severely damaged for a very long time.

There are far too many adults who never end up doing what they are really supposed to be doing with their lives because they are unable to pull themselves free of all the poisonous negativity and pessimism they heard from the people around them while they were growing up and from the company they keep on a day to day basis.

It's up to you to pack your survival kit. The farmer in our story knew that he needed to get proper medical attention quickly. But what do you do if you realize that it is YOU who has been stung by a Scorpion?

  • 1. FORGIVE yourself for allowing it to happen. Sounds crazy right, especially if you realize that it is something that occurred when you were too young to know it was happening. But there is tremendous FREEDOM found in forgiveness.
  • 2. FORGIVE the person who hurt you as completely and quickly as you possibly can. You end up releasing yourself from the power they have over you. Your forgiveness BLESSES and RELEASES them from their ties to you and you can start the healing process.
  • 3. Listen to your own inner self when you need to discern the TRUTH about what you heard. Always ask yourself; is there any truth to what was said. If your gut tells you that the information is not true, get rid of it as fast as you can! Here's something my coach told me that I took to heart. It has saved me a ton of money, time and self-doubt … and I hope it does the same for you!

    Never take ADVICE or pay attention to OPINIONS from anyone who has less money than you when it comes to investing or spending your money. Never take health advice from someone who is not as healthy as you want to be. Never take relationship advice from someone whose relationships are in a shambles. NEVER pay attention to business advice from anyone who has not achieved what you want to achieve and who does not have documented results to PROVE the advice they are giving you.

  • 5. Choose to spend your time with people that speak life over YOU. Your life and business will blossom and thrive. As you are blessed by their words, you will be able to bless more people with YOUR words!
