January 2010 is an opportune moment to personally move forward in our lives to replace the failed money-serving institutions of our present economy with the institutions of a new economy dedicated to serving life…to serving people…to fulfilling the intentions of our Creator.
The idea that we humans might put life ahead of money may seem unrealistic and contrary to what we believe our human nature to be. Isn’t that what our prevailing cultural story would have us believe…???
Truth be told, that story is just as real as the story that Wall Street speculation serves a higher public purpose. Scientists have found that the human brain is hard-wired for compassion and connection…for LOVE…
Don’t we all… from every corner of the globe … people of every race…nationality…and religion… share the dream of a world of happy, healthy children, families, and communities living in vibrant, healthy, natural environments…??? A shared dream of a world that works for all of humanity…???
Truly, the only legitimate function of an economic system is to serve life. Most of us are living to work..rather than working to LOVE…
Our current paradigm assesses economic performance solely against financial indicators…while disregarding social and environmental consequences. We are now paying the price for decades of managing the economy…and our lives… for financial gain…
What this really translates into is making money for people who have money…
To put it even more simply… making rich people richer…
At the expense of other people…ourselves…our families…our friends…our acquaintances..
It was not a wise choice.
We are now witnessing and in many cases LIVING, first-hand, the devastating costs of this foolishness in the form of massive social and environmental damage and global financial instability.
This would be a good time to start evaluating economic performance against indicators of what we really want- happy and healthy children, families, communities, and natural systems. This would place life values ahead of money values.
Happiness is an important indicator of physical and psychological health...
How happy are YOU…your FAMILY….your FRIENDS…your ACQUAINTANCES…???
The HAPPIEST PEOPLE that I know are the ones THAT GIVE LOVE TO EVERYONE FREELY….
And in return…THEY ARE RETURNED EVEN MORE LOVE…
